Julie Ann Freischlag, M.D.
Dr. Freischlag is The William Stewart Halsted Professor, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Prior to becoming the Chair at Johns Hopkins, she was Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at UCLA (1998-2003) where she did her general surgery residency and vascular fellowship. Before Dr. Freischlag returned to work at UCLA, she was a Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin where she was also the Vice Chair of the Vascular Surgery Section and Chief of Surgery at Zablocki VA Medical Center. She attended Rush Medical School.
She is the current President of the Society for Vascular Surgery and has served as President of the Society for Surgical Chairs; President of the Baltimore Academy of Surgery; President of the Association of VA Surgeons; Treasurer of the Association for Academic Surgery; and has Chaired the Credentials Committee of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Freischlag has served as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons (2000-2006), a Regent of the American of the College of Surgeons since 2006, and was elected Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons in October, 2012. Dr. Freischlag is the Editor of JAMA Surgery, and also serves on the editorial board of several other prominent surgical journals including the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, Vascular Surgery, and the British Journal of Surgery.
Dr. Freischlag is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome. She is the national principal investigator of the VA OVER trial (Open Versus Endovascular Repair) of abdominal aortic aneurysms. The study is a prospective randomized trial which has randomized over 800 patients from 34 medical centers across the country. She has published over 200 manuscripts, numerous abstracts and book chapters and has given presentations nationally and internationally.
Dr. Freischlag is married to Phil Roethle and they have 3 sons, Matthew (34), Paul (33) and his wife
Gretchen and Taylor who is 18.
