Sex Differences in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Mechanisms

An article outlining the differences between the sexes in progression of COPD. This is becoming an increasing problem, as women require less exposure to tobacco smoke to develop COPD compared to men. Additionally, there are differences in lung histology between men and women, as women show less emphysema and more small airway disease. The mechanisms by which women develop COPD differently than men is still relatively unknown–there are many hypotheses, but further study is required.
