Mission & Vision
The American Medical Women’s Association is an organization which functions at the local, national, and international level to advance women in medicine and improve women’s health.
We achieve this by providing and developing leadership, advocacy, education, expertise, mentoring, and strategic alliances.
The American Medical Women’s Association Residency Division empowers resident physicians to lead in improving health for all within a model that reflects the unique perspective of women while advancing academically and personally during their training years.
Despite the extraordinary progress women have made in medicine over the last 150 years, there continues to be a pressing need for female role models and mentors, as well as increased study of women’s health issues. Since 1915, the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) has been working to address these issues by serving as the voice of women’s health and the advancement of women in medicine. The American Medical Women’s Association Resident Division (AMWA RD) recognizes that the years of a resident’s education, training and early career are those of excitement, challenge and anxiety. March 2010 ushered in the creation of the AMWA Residency Division. Designed to be a link between medical students and their attending physicians, the Residency Division also stands alone in recognizing the excitement, challenges, and anxiety that accompany the resident’s education, training and early career. The transition from medical student to acting physician is not an easy one, and the AMWA Residency Division aims to aid in this transition by providing mentorship, camaraderie, recognition of outstanding achievement, funding for global medicine pursuits, and networking opportunities. Additionally, our aim is to improve resident wellbeing and workplace environments.
