I am passionate about equality in all its forms and abhor discrimination. My wife is a very strong female leader in medicine and practises as an attending in maxillofacial surgery – I have always supported her and am a true ally to female physicians. We have two young daughters aged 5 and 8 and I want to do all I can to support and encourage them in the current inequitable workplace arena.
I always taught medical students and supervised family medicine residents as a clinician and found it one of the most rewarding aspects of my physician role. I tutored multiple female indigenous medical students when we recently lived in Darwin, Australia, and supported them through some tough challenges e.g. bullying by residents/attendings, racial discrimination etc.
I see it as one of my roles now to do all I can to speak up and call out discrimination wherever I see it and part of my coaching practice involves restoring and reinforcing confidence in those who experienced such treatment and lessening the negative mindset they inevitably developed, thereby diminishing their limiting beliefs and enabling them to thrive in the workplace.
