Christine Moutier, MD
Chief Medical Officer, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention
Christine Moutier, MD, has been a practicing psychiatrist, professor of psychiatry, dean in the medical school, and medical director of the Inpatient Psychiatric Unit at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla. As the chief medical officer for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, Dr. Moutier continues to serve as a leader in the field of suicide prevention by advocating for increased education and stigma reduction to shift a culture which asks physicians to internalize stress as a part of their professional identity. In addition to the institutional shift toward policies and procedures which normalize mental health issues at the hospital or practice level, Dr. Moutier has been instrumental in highlighting the role of licensing boards in framing questions of mental health in light of competence rather than illness, or dispensing with such questions in lieu of a statement which encourages proactive measures to protect physician mental health.
