Arthur S. Hengerer, MD, former chair and professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, has dedicated over four decades at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He developed a clinical program that eventually led to the expansion of the department’s outpatient services for every subspecialty of otolaryngology. His latest commitment is geared toward physician wellness and resilience to address burnout and suicide in health care professionals. He has become a co-lead at the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-Being and Resilience and became the chair at the New York State Department of Health Office of Professional Medical Conduct. As one of the directors of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), he chaired the FSMB Workgroup on Physician Wellness and Burnout that convened in April of 2016 and identified resources and strategies to address physician burnout. The Workgroup’s report, adopted as official FSMB policy in April of 2018, includes recommendations for removal of questions about previous treatment on licensing applications, or appropriate phrasing that focuses only on current impairment.
