Work-Life Integration
Access AMWA's Work-Life Integration ToolkitWhile there is no magic recipe for success, the key to more effective work-life “balance” is to understand the “spheres” in your life and the dynamic that drives each one. Every individual has a different set of spheres that they would like to juggle more effectively (e.g. partnership, children, career, community). The exact idea of work-life “balance” evolves over time with each of us. As we get older, our priorities change and lead to various permutations of combining work and family— from working part-time or full-time, to telecommuting and adopting flextime options. Fertility and Family Building
Learn more about AMWA's Physician Fertility Initiative
The decision for family building is an individual one and family means different things to different people. In AMWA, we want to ensure that women in medicine have the resources and knowledge that they need to make these choices.
For those who do want to build families, studies have shown that 1:4 women physicians may experience infertility, a rate that is much higher than for the general population. Reproductive health issues, financial limitations, and the timing of motherhood impacts career advancement and the physician workforce, as many women juggle the competing challenges of career advancement or building their family. Knowledge is power, so in 2020, AMWA launched a Physician Fertility Committee to begin addressing this issue and in 2021, hosted the first Physician Fertility Summit on this topic. In 2022, we were honored with the Hope Award for Advocacy by RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Our goal is to ensure that women physicians have the resources they need to pursue career aspirations and plan for family-building, should they choose to do so. We invite you to join us in this effort.
