The first women’s monument on any states’ capitol grounds has begun in Virginia as part of a collaboration between the Women’s Legacy Project and the 2019 Commemoration, American Evolution™. The monument will feature 12 women who have played a defining role in both Virginian and American history. Notably, the monument will include two female medical professionals; acclaimed nurse and founder of her own Civil War hospital, Sally Louisa Tompkins, and the first African American woman to ever pass the Virginia Medical Boards and founder of her own teaching hospital, Sarah Garland Boyd Jones. These women will represent not only doctors and nurses throughout the state, but serve as a national reminder of women’s influence on medicine. Share these women’s stories with future generations by supporting the campaign.
