On Saturday January 11th, 2014, AMWA’s President-elect, Farzanna Haffizulla MD FACP organized and moderated a community outreach event at American Heritage School in Plantation, Florida. Working in conjunction with AMWA’s incoming national treasurer, Dr. Shahnaz Fatteh and the South Florida branch of AMWA, over $34,000 in national sponsorship funds was raised in this well attended symposium. A historical summary of AMWA, AWHS, information on AMWA’s national ally Vision 2020 as well as a host of topics including heart health updates, prevention of disease guidelines, sports injury prevention, women wellness visits, brain based learning, financial health and family safety were discussed. Featured top rated speakers included Dr. Fawwas Mohiuddin, , an orthopedic surgeon with previous affiliation with the Miami Heat and the Chicago Cubs was sponsored by Florida Medical Center, Dr. Jason Haffizulla, Women Heart national champion Yaskary Reyes, Mujeres Latinas award winner, Dr. Dalia McCoy, Dr. Viviana Navas, Dr. Marion Colas La-Combe, Jackie Davis and Candace Mize also lectured. AMWA’s student division President, Marissa Orenstein and community leaders including Michael Calderin, Dr. Anthony Silvagni, Dean of Nova Southeastern University School of Medicine were also featured speakers. Sponsoring companies included Ameriprise Financial, Holy Cross Hospital, Florida Medical Center, AI Biotech, Walgreens, CSL Bering, Nova Southeastern University, Broward PET Imaging, Teva pharmaceuticals, Meda pharmaceuticals, Accredo, Mylan, Millenium Laser Eye center, Orange Theory Fitness, Ambient Healthcare and Hospice by the Sea. Additional private sponsors included Drs. Edward and Joanne Dauer and Dr. Colas-Lacombe. American Heritage School was awarded an AMWA plaque for their continued generous support of AMWA’s mission and vision. Several students and volunteers also received certificates of appreciation to celebrate their diligent efforts in support of AMWA’s growth and messaging. Honorees included Dr. Carlos Pulido, the American Heritage Pre-med society, Sacha Hauc, Nicole Sevilla, Daniela Alejaldre, Susan Bethel, Viktor Kurako, Daniel Tanchez, Ryan Witcher, Victoria Silverman and Brooke Oster. While the symposium was ongoing in the main auditorium, sponsoring companies had company display tables or break out session rooms for Financial talks or Reiki healing information. The event was studded with opportunities for networking, mentoring and organizational synergy. This successful event brought together all local AMWA chapters, community and local leaders and amplified the enthusiasm and passion to promote AMWA’s visibility and strength as the centennial celebration approaches.
