Past AMWA President Dr. Haffizulla Participates in the Office Of Women’s Health Opioid Use, Abuse and Overdose in Women Summit

The Office of Women’s Health held its first national summit on opioid use, abuse and overdose in women September 29th and 30th in Washington D.C. This meeting brought together national leaders and stakeholders including our Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy and Dr. Karen Scott, Chief Medical Officer at the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health. According to HHS.gov, “In response to the increasing impact of the opioid crisis on women, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office on Women’s Health (OWH) is convening a national conversation (#OWHOpioidSummit) to examine the unique prevention, treatment, and recovery issues for women who use, abuse, or overdose on opioids. This meeting will build upon the Secretary’s opioid initiative, examining the unique and specific needs of women in the context of that epidemic.OWH brings together policy experts, program staff, researchers, clinicians, and women with lived experience to foster a national conversation on best policies and practices to address these growing challenges. The meeting will provide opportunities to share best practices and support the development of evidence-based policies.

AMWA Past President, co-chair of the Preventive Medicine Task Force and Chief Scientific Officer for Haven Home Health  attended and participated in this vital meeting. “Understanding the scope and spectrum of prevention, identification and treatment for patients either at risk for opioid dependence  or those with dependence are essential as we move closer towards ending this national crisis. I urge you to support the Surgeon General’s “Turn The Tide Rx” initiative to improve collaboration and communication as we work towards a common goal of national good health and wellness” says Dr. Haffizulla.
