AMWA Applauds Shady Grove Fertility on the Launch of their Fertility Program for Women Surgery Residents
When the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) queried our members several years ago about the challenge of fertility among women physicians, the response was a resounding “yes.” In response, AMWA formed a Physician Fertility Committee to consider how best to address this point of tension that affects one in four women in medicine.
Over the past three years, we hosted the first Physician Fertility Summit, conducted a series of workshops, launched Fertility Coaching Groups, and partnered with RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association to develop the AMWA-RESOLVE Coverage-at-Work Toolkit so that women physicians could advocate for fertility care as a part of regular benefits coverage. In advocating for fertility benefits coverage, we hope to remove financial barriers to family building for physicians who may already be shouldering heavy loan burdens. AMWA recognizes Shady Grove Fertility, a partner of US Fertility, for their newly launched Egg Freezing for Surgical Residents Program, announced today—on National Women Physicians Day.
“We know that the length of surgical training often coincides with peak fertility years,” says Eliza Chin, MD, MPH, AMWA Executive Director. “Programs like this provide more options for women physicians who may be considering family-building in the future.”
Access to the Egg Freezing for Surgical Residents Program will help extend family-planning options to a group of women in medicine who might otherwise not be able to pursue egg freezing. AMWA hopes that more programs like this will become available to women physicians and commends Shady Grove Fertility for its commitment to and support of women in medicine.
