The Medical Women’s International Association calls upon the International Community to respond urgently to the plight of the people of Venezuela who are in the midst of a democratic and humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile the people of Venezuela, especially its children, are vulnerable and starving and the medical community, which is attempting to provide basic emergency care, is being hampered by the government, which has refused demands to respect human rights. Thousands of Venezuelans have fled to Brazil and other neighboring countries.
In private communication with Medical Women’s International Association, Dr. Douglas Leon Natera, the President of the Medical Federation of Venezuela, has reported that the country has no medical supplies and that people are starving. Medical Women’s International Association will be reaching out to its partners at the World Medical Association, the World Health Organization, and the United Nations to bring the crisis to the attention of the international community.
