AMWA’s Collaboration with National Obesity Care Week 2015 Contributed to the Campaign’s Success!
AMWA was a strong partner in the 2015 National Obesity Care Week Campaign, a national movement to ensure that everyone affected by obesity receives respectful and comprehensive care.
National Obesity Care Week (NOCW), launched last November, represents a national movement to ensure that everyone affected by obesity receives respectful and comprehensive care. The Campaign was founded by The Obesity Society, The Obesity Action Coalition, Strategies to Overcome and Prevent (STOP) Obesity Alliance and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. AMWA was a strong partner in the 2015 campaign and AMWA’s work is highlighted in the Campaign Overview that is being presented to the Campaign’s 39 partners.
AMWA’s team was led by Dr. Connie Newman (AMWA Preventive Medicine Task Force (PMTF) Co-Chair) with the help of Dr. Farzanna Haffizulla (AMWA Past President and PMTF Co-Chair) and Laura Gardner (AMWA Social Media Chair). Overall, from the work of all the collaborators, the NOCW website received 11,285 page visits from 3.300 unique visitors, spending an average of 2.5 minutes on the website. This demonstrates the value of Twitter and Facebook as public health and advocacy tools.
Key NOCW messages:
• Patients with obesity deserve respect and compassion and need a comprehensive, individualized approach to treatment
• Obesity is a complex disease with multiple contributing factors: physiological, psychological, environmental, and genetic
• Obesity is not a lifestyle choice
• Patients with obesity are subject to stigma and weight bias
AMWA looks forward to participating in the 2016 Campaign which will continue to raise awareness of obesity among health care providers and patients. To get involved, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org and/or email@example.com .
