National Women Physicians Day

February 3, 2022 @ 5:30 pm ET

The GEMS Alliance launches our collective initiative on February 3, 2022—National Women Physicians Day and the birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first women physician in the United States.

GEMS Mission: Catalyzing alignment, collaboration, and innovative approaches so that all women achieve their full potential in advancing medicine and science.

The Alliance seeks to achieve equity for all women in academic medicine and science which will, in turn, drive equity in healthcare for all. The mission of the Alliance is to catalyze alignment, collaboration, and innovative approaches so that all women achieve their full potential in advancing medicine and science. Meet the GEMS Alliance Executive Board.

This initiative was founded as a partnership of the following organizations. In addition to AMWA, they include the Center for Women in Academic Medicine and Science (CWAMS), Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM), Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS), American College of Physicians (ACP), and National Medical Association (NMA). We believe that by joining forces, our collective strength will gain momentum for change. Please consider joining our alliance to add your voice and energy toward achieving gender equity. The Alliance seeks to achieve equity for all women in academic medicine and science which will, in turn, drive equity in healthcare for all. The mission of the Alliance is to catalyze alignment, collaboration, and innovative approaches so that all women achieve their full potential in advancing medicine and science.

The Alliance will focus on four critical issues that are barriers to achieving gender equity in academic medicine and science:

  1. Need for more URiM women admitted to medical school
  2. Too few women in male-dominated specialties
  3. The gender gap in healthcare leadership
  4. The burden of caregiving and its impact on women in medicine
