Today, on the 51st anniversary of Roe v. Wade, AMWA reaffirms our commitment to restore and protect reproductive rights. We applaud Vice President Harris as she launches the “Fight for Reproductive Freedoms” tour in Wisconsin to champion the fundamental right to reproductive care. Dr. Roberta Gebhard, AMWA past president and founding member of the Gender Equity Task Force, was present for the launch.
Why Wisconsin? When Roe v. Wade was overturned, the regulation of abortion reverted to an old law from 1849 that banned abortion except when performed to save the life of the mother. For about 15 months, abortions were not performed in the state, until a court case upheld an interpretation of the law that pertained to “feticide” rather than abortion. This situation underscores the challenging legal landscape that practitioners often navigate when trying to care for their patients.
In 2021, when Roe v. Wade was overturned, AMWA and Doctors for America co-founded the Reproductive Health Coalition to advocate for the right of healthcare practitioners to provide comprehensive, evidence-based care. The coalition meets monthly and has worked to unify healthcare voices, advocate for legislation, write amici briefs, and conduct trainings and workshops.
The coalition will be hosting an Op-Ed Writing Workshop on January 30. We invite you to join us.
