AMWA Leaders Attend Vision 2020 Congress

AMWA leaders, Dr. Roberta Gebhard, Dr. Farzanna Haffizulla, and Dr. Eliza Chin attended the 6th Vision 2020 National Congress in Miami, Florida. The theme of the conference was Paths to Shared Leadership. Featured speakers included Donna Shalala, former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services and former President of Miami University, Jewelle Bickford, co-chair for the Paradigm for Parity movement, and Rickie Houston, Trainer for A Call to Men.

One of Vision 2020’s goals is to promote increased voter turnout among women.  A website that summarizes every issue on every candidate was introduced:

Delegates from around the country shared updates regarding their work. AMWA leaders reported on the work of AMWA’s Gender Equity Task Force, including Fixing the Leaky Pipeline (for women in medicine) and website resource page for #MeTooMedicine as well as AMWA’s film, At Home and Over There: American Women Physicians in WWI which featured some of the women physician suffragists.

Words of Wisdom from Former HHS Secretary Donna Shalala’s Speech:

“I developed an ability to say ‘we can do it’ even if everyone else says that we can’t do it.”

“Never eat lunch at your desk.”  [i.e. go out and network!]

“To make health policy, you have to understand people’s lives.  You have to understand the population and the people.”

On public life:  “You don’t need to do it full time but everyone needs to do something.”

“Keep yourself grounded.  That’s what being a good citizen is about.”
