March 4th, 2018 was the very first International HPV Awareness Day. In order to mark its significance and to promote awareness and education around HPV, HPV related diseases and cervical cancer, AMWA is proud to launch the HPV and Cervical Cancer task force. The task force will be chaired by Shobha. S. Krishnan, MD, FAAFP, Founder and President of the Global Initiative Against HPV and Cervical Cancer (GIAHC).
GIAHC and AMWA have been working together and have developed educational materials for AMWA students branches to take to schools and community health centers to raise awareness around HPV. Among the AMWA students working on these educational materials and the publicity for HPV Awareness Day are Reid Mergler, AMWA Region 2 Director and Team Captain of the GIAHC Young Leaders Program, Shilpa Darivemula and Cassie Jones.
The AMWA HPV and Cervical Cancer Task Force aims to continue to grow and strengthen this effort while seeking further opportunities to raise awareness about the HPV vaccine and the importance of screening.
