AMWA Interim Meeting: Planning for Future Success

The AMWA Interim Meeting was held at the historic Van Hoosen Farm, home of AMWA founder, Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen (Petticoat Surgeon). The meeting opened with a welcome from AMWA President Dr. Connie Newman and a reflection on the organization’s history and mission and a view to AMWA’s future vision for women in medicine. Board members and committee chairs shared reports of their work which ranged from education about sex and gender specific medicine to human trafficking to gender equity. Speakers included Dr. Reshma Jagsi, Dr. Suzanne Harrison, Ms. Maureen Thalmann, and Whitney Moss.

The evening Women in Medicine Reception was graciously hosted by the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine and featured inspirational keynotes by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina and Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha.  Order Dr. Hanna-Attisha’s new book, What the Eyes Don’t See on Amazon [link to the Amazon site for the book].  Extra signed copies of Judge Aquilina’s book, Triple Cross Killer are available through AMWA.

AMWA’s strategic planning committee met for an extended but productive session to discuss AMWA’s renewed focus and direction for the coming years.  Stay posted for the strategic planning report to be released next spring.

Former board member Dr. Manveen Saluja praised the meeting’s breadth of coverage on “public health advocacy, physicians’ role in advancing medical care and understanding of trafficking and social issues affecting patients, medical care of patients with orthopedic issues in cerebral palsy and many more topics, including gender equity in academic medicine and a better understanding of medical institutions that are making changes in diversity, inclusion, equality, and equity.”
