AMWA Global Health Lead Reports from the World Health Assembly Events

As AMWA’s Global Health Lead, I represented AMWA and Women in Global Health at events surrounding the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva Switzerland.

Tha Annual Walk the Talk: Health for All Challenge was held on Sunday, May 26 to kickstart the 77th World Health Assembly. I attended, along with UN officials, Member State representatives, non-governmental organizations, athletes, local health partners, and the Geneva community to recognize the importance of healthy lifestyles.

On May 26, I was invited as a special guest to attend the launch of WHO’s Investment Round and announcement of the 5th Film Festival. At the event, I met Dr  Samira Asma Assistant Director General for WHO’s Data, Analytics and Delivery for Impact Division and Ms. Nandita Das, an Indian Actress and jury member of the film festival.

On  May 27, I represented AMWA at the WHA Side event Congenital Anomalies and Universal health: Leaving No One Behind, cosponsored by Operation Smile , Global Arch, G4 Alliance, and Jhpiego.

On May 27, AMWA Executive Director Dr. Eliza Chin and I met the  Health Minister of Jamaica, Dr. the Honorable Christopher Tufton.

On May 28, I represented AMWA at a high stakeholders meeting on Nutrition and Childhood NCDs, sponsored by the WHO Initiative For Childhood Cancer, Columbia University and International Society of Pediatric Oncology.

On May 28, I was one of two keynote  speakers to give opening remarks at the WHA 77 side event Global Health Governance and Emerging Geopolitical Risks.

On May 28, I attended a high-level side event, Ear and Hearing Care, co-organized by the Permanent Mission of Slovakia and the Department of Health of the Philippines.

I was honored to present Prof Jozef Šuvada, Executive Member of the WHO Board  and Ambassador at large of Slovakia for Global Health a copy of the C7 communique, as she was a member of the global health working group and the focal point for the climate and health subgroup.

On May 29, I was a panelist on women’s leadership for an event organized by the Health Innovation  Exchange.

On May 30, I was the keynote speaker at the 2024 Global Health Diplomacy Summit.

On May 30, I had the opportunity to meet Dr Sania Nishtar, the head of GAVI, and had an opportunity to discuss barriers to immunization for women and girls.

These opportunities, to be a voice for AMWA and Women and Global Health, help ensure that our perspectives as women physician leaders continue to be heard among global leaders and coalitions.
