AMWA Executive Director Dr. Eliza Chin and GME Committee Co-chair Dr. Joan Lo represented AMWA in the 5th Anniversary celebration of Stanford CARE (Center for Asian Health Research and Education) on Thursday, September 28 at the Stanford Health Library. Stanford CARE was founded by Dr. Latha Palaniappan and Dr. Bryant Lin with the goal of improving “the health of Asians everywhere by ending health disparities through increasing knowledge, empowering education, and positively impacting Asian clinical care.” The vision of Stanford CARE is to serve as the premier academic leader in Asian precision health. In the past 5 years, the institute has made impressive accomplishments within four core initiatives, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, cancer, longevity, and mental health with the goal of increasing research and knowledge in Asian health, improving the delivery of health care for Asians, and educating patients, providers, and the community about the health needs of Asians. The work of Stanford CARE has included community programs and international collaborations. Sally Shan Li is the executive director of the Center.
Among the honorees at the event was Dr. Grace Yoo, Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University and author books and articles on Asian American health and the Korean American experience.
AMWA has partnered with Stanford CARE for the past two years on film screenings and discussions during Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month. In 2022, we featured Far East Deep South, a film that explores deeply personal narratives about immigration, race and American identity. Following the screening, we held a special Q&A with filmmakers Larissa Lam and Baldwin Chiu. In 2023, we screened the film Try Harder, a film which takes us into the real life experiences of today’s high stakes college admissions process and the toll that it takes on students. A panel of speakers, including film maker Debbie Lum and Stanford CARE faculty member Dr. Rona Hu, former Lowell Student Kian Mojabi, and Cathy Zhao of Laugh Out Loud discussed several themes highlighted in the film, including mental wellbeing for students.
AMWA looks forward to future partnerships with Stanford CARE in support of their goal to address healthcare disparities within Asian American communities.
