AMWA Branch 30 hosted an evening to discuss end of life issues in light of the passage of California’s Aid-in-dying law. Guest speakers included Dr. Pete Reagan (past Medical Director Compassions & Choices), Rev. Mark Estes (Hospice Chaplain at Gentiva Health Services), Stefanie Elkins, MA (CA Medical Outreach Manager at Compassion & Choices), and Dr. Eliza Chin (AMWA Executive Director). Physicians, medical students, pre-medical students, and hospice representatives participated in a thoughtful and inspiring conversation about supporting patients in their choices at the end of life. Dr. Reagan shared his experience of being the first doctor to prescribe under Oregon’s Death With Dignity law.

AMWA leaders joined physicians from Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, CA for a networking brunch on Saturday, December 10, 2016. Career/life balance and avoiding burnout were the main topics of discussion. Attendees shared their experiences of the challenges that women physicians face in their careers and roles as mothers, partners, and family caretakers. Solutions discussed included finding mentors, expanding women physician support groups, and speaking up.
