AMWA Branch 30 (SF Bay Area) participates in screening of Girl in White, a film about AMWA Past President Dr. Emily Dunning Barringer

Jan 25, 2017 — AMWA Branch 30 (San Francisco Bay Area) joined St. Paul’s Towers for a special screening of Girl in Whitea 1952 MGM film about Dr. Emily Dunning Barringer (June Allyson), New York City’s first ambulance surgeon. The movie chronicles Dr. Barringer’s experiences as the first female intern at Gouverneur Hospital in New York City. Dr. Barringer also published an autobiography, From Bowery to Bellevue, about those experiences. In later years, Dr. Barringer would become president of the American Medical Women’s Association and help lead the fight for women to gain commissioned status in the military. Dr. Laurel Waters (AMWA Branch 30 President) gave opening remarks along with Sarah Schear (AMWA Medical Student), the great grandniece of Dr. Emily Dunning Barringer.

The group also discussed interesting books that students were reading.
