In Memoriam: Edith P. Mitchell, MD, MACP, FCCP, FRCP (London)

AMWA was saddened to learn about the sudden and unexpected passing of healthcare trailblazer and civil rights pioneer Edith P. Mitchell, MD, MACP, FCCP, FRCP (London).

Dr. Mitchell was an esteemed speaker at AMWA’s 108th Anniversary Meeting – Thriving, Leading, Transforming in 2023.

Dr. Mitchell served as the Enterprise Vice President for Cancer Disparities at Jefferson Health’s Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, as well as Director of the Center to Eliminate Cancer Disparities, and Professor of Medicine and Medical Oncology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Mitchell held numerous leadership positions at her home institution and nationally. Dr. Mitchell’s contributions include selection to the National Cancer Institute’s Blue Ribbon Panel to advise the National Cancer Advisory Board on then-Vice President Joe Biden’s National Cancer Moonshot Initiative, and the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils. Dr. Mitchell served as the 116th President of the National Medical Association and was an appointed member of the President’s Cancer Panel from 2019-2023. She participated on committees for the NCI, ECOG-ACRIN, the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), NRG Oncology, and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Dr. Mitchell has received multiple recognitions including the AACR’s Jane Cooke Wright, MD Lectureship Award, ASCO’s Humanitarian Award, the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Control Award, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the City of Philadelphia’s Octavius Valentine Catto Award for community service, the ‘Tree of Life’ Award recognizing health professionals committed to making a difference in community health, and the 2016 Historically Black College Alumnus of the Year. She has been inducted into the National Historical Black College Hall of Fame and is an honorary member of the American Society for Radiation Oncology. Dr. Mitchell’s life is an example of a life of inspiration.

AMWA will be making a gift to the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center in her honor and Dr. Mitchell will be honored during AMWA’s White Rose Ceremony at the 2024 AMWA Annual Meeting.
