Navigating Social Injustices as a Woman of Color in Academic Medicine

SPEAKERS:

  • E. Vanessa Spearman-McCarthy, MD – Associate Dean for Learner Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University
  • Heather Huang, MD –  Medical Director, University of Wisconsin Health Collaborative Care model

Dr. Spearman is from the Southeastern part of the U.S. and is a born descendent of African slaves. Dr. Huang is in the Midwest and is of Chinese descent. They discuss the intersectionality of being women of color in academics AND dealing with racial trauma, microaggressions, and gender discrimination.

They will discuss the subject of racial trauma and trauma from institutional racism and solutions. Time will be available for breakout rooms and networking.
