AMWA’s Voice in the AMA Women Physician Section

Roberta E. Gebhard, DO

Governing Council Applications Open – Deadline March 8

I was fortunate for the past four years to be the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) representative to the American Medical Association (AMA) Women Physicians Section (WPS) Governing Council (GC). As I complete my tenure, AMWA’s looking for a new physician to take over this role.

Apply for AMA WPS Governing Council Role

In this position, I was a Governing Council member with seven others, who represented more than 100,000 women physicians in the AMA. It was a great opportunity for networking, learning about the AMA resolution process, and working together to make sure the AMA understands Medicine from the perspective of women.
The requirement for this position is to help the AMA WPS GC come up with a strategic plan and see that the work is done.  There are opportunities to plan programming, review resolutions, and decide whether the AMA WPS GC wants to support them.
The time requirements for meetings are one to two hours once a month, virtually, and attending three in-person meetings per year of 2 to 3 days each — and your presence at all of the meetings is required. The AMA does reimburse you for the in person meeting expenses.
This is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to get involved with organized medicine, who is interested in politics, and who wants to be mentored and be a mentor. This has been an invaluable experience for me. I have expanded my network dramatically, and am looking forward to continuing on as AMWA’s alternate delegate to the AMA’s House of Delegates!
