Sylk M. Sotto, MBA, MPS, EdD
Dr. Sotto serves as the Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs, Development, and Diversity in the Department of Medicine. Her scholarship and research centers on (in)equity in academic medicine. She co-chairs IUSM’s Diversity Council and serves in numerous institutional committees. As a long-time leader in higher education and academic medicine, her involvement at the national level includes the Board of Directors and Diversity& Inclusion liaison for the Alliance of Academic Internal Medicine (AAIM). She is also President-elect of the Association for Administrators in Internal Medicine. With over 1,300 members, the association represents chief administrative officers and senior business administrators in departments of medicine nationwide. She is also an active member of various AAMC groups, ASHE, NADOHE, and POD Network.
Dr. Sotto teaches several courses, including Foundations of Clinical Practice in the Spanish immersion program, research ethics, and culturally relevant practices in medicine. In addition, her interests include faculty affairs and professional development; equity, inclusion and diversity; STEM/medical education; and leadership.
Dr. Sotto holds a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Colorado State University, a Masters in Business Administration; a Masters in Healthcare Leadership with a concentration in Health Policy, Law and Ethics; and a Doctorate in Higher Education from the University of Denver. Her dissertation focused on the experiences of minoritized/underrepresented faculty in academic medicine, including their socialization, mentoring, and professional development.
Dr. Sotto was born and raised in Puerto Rico.
