Dr. Elise Carey is Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Education & Faculty Development Chair for the enterprise-wide Center for Palliative Medicine.  Teaching, mentorship, curriculum and program development activities are the major focus of Dr. Carey’s academic efforts, and teaching and working with patients are the things that bring her the most joy at work.  Dr. Carey is a national leader in communication skills training for clinicians caring for patients with serious illness, and she teaches communication and teaching skills to practicing clinicians both nationally and internationally.  She has held several local and national leadership roles.  She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and she is a Partner at VitalTalk, which is the leading provider of evidence-based communication trainings for clinicians nationally.  Her work has been published in high-impact scientific journals including Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Academic Medicine, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Journal of Palliative Medicine, among others.
