Cecilia Schmalbach, MD, MS, FACS
Cecelia E. Schmalbach, MD, MS, FACS is a fellowship-trained head and neck (H&N) microvascular surgeon nationally recognized for her expertise in cutaneous cancers. After completing her otolaryngology residency at the University of Michigan in 2004—during which she earned a Master of Science in Clinical Research Design and Statistics—Dr. Schmalbach went on to fellowship training at Vanderbilt University in 2005.
Dr. Schmalbach served eight years of active duty in the United States Air Force, including a deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She was the Otolaryngology Residency Program Director and Director of the Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Tumor Board at the University of Alabama Birmingham before being recruited to Indiana University, where she currently serves as the Vice Chair of Clinical Affairs, Division Head of H&N Surgery, Co-Director of the Multidisciplinary Endocrine Center, Co-Fellowship Director for Head and Neck-Microvascular Surgery and Chief of Otolaryngology at Eskenazi Hospital.
In addition to her expertise in cutaneous cancers of the head and neck, Dr. Schmalbach has extensive experience in endocrine surgery, mucosal neoplasms, and H&N trauma. Her scientific contributions include the research of sentinel node biopsy for H&N cutaneous cancers and the management of advanced skin cancers. She currently serves as the Deputy Editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.
