Hilit F. Mechaber, MD, FACP

HFMechaber-photo-largerDr. Hilit Mechaber is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM). She received her BS and MD degrees from the University of Miami, where she graduated from the Honors Program in Medicine, and completed her residency in Primary Care Internal Medicine at the George Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Mechaber holds faculty appointments in Internal Medicine and Family Medicine and Community Health. She has been a core member of the teaching faculty of the Generalist Education in Medicine programs, and continues to teach medical students in their multidisciplinary ambulatory care clerkship and physical diagnosis programs.

Dr. Mechaber’s professional niche is in the area of career development and work-life balance. In 2008, Dr. Mechaber was appointed as dean for student services, and in this capacity she creates and oversees programs and resources available for medical student support, including directing the Office of Professional Development and Career Guidance. She has been actively involved in the national dialogue promoting personal-professional balance and flexible career options for physicians with a focus on the academic medicine workforce. She was invited to serve on the Association of Specialty Professors National Task Force on Part-Time Careers and the AAMC Careers in Medicine National Advisory Committee. She is also the immediate past chair of the AAMC Southern Region Group on Student Affairs, and served as the University of Miami Institutional representative to the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science for 8 years.

She continues to teach and mentor medical students and junior faculty. Dr. Mechaber values her role as a medical educator and has been recognized by her students and faculty alike with several teaching and community awards for her efforts.
She is the proud mother of two daughters and married to a fellow academic general internist and dean of medical education. In her “spare” time, she loves to sing, bake, watch Hurricane football, and TV home design shows with her kids.
