A native of California, Dr. Elizabeth Franzmann received her M.D. from UCLA, School of Medicine in 1995. She was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology and in July 2002, Dr. Franzmann joined the University of Miami, Department of Otolaryngology. In her role as a researcher, a lifesaving breakthrough has been made possible by the innovative clinical research and diagnostic technology by her group. Dr. Franzmann’s lab is investigating a simple inexpensive early detection method of oral cancer. Many millions are threatened by this disease since the main risk factors are tobacco and alcohol use and the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). With a simple gargle and spit test, patients can learn they are at risk for developing oral cancer long before the first lesion appears. Dr. Franzmann also serves as Chief Scientific for Vigilant Biosciences, a start-up company founded on this oral rinse early detection technology. The company plans to make this oral cancer screening tool available to the general public in the near future. Most of Dr. Franzmann’s clinical career has been spent providing surgical expertise to head and neck cancer patients at Jackson Memorial Hospital and at the University of Miami. Dr. Franzmann has also been awarded recognition in the Best Doctors in America for the last three years.
