The AMWA ELEVATE Certificate in Leadership Fundamentals is a program for women physicians. The course focuses on six (6) core competencies recognized as essential to any leader and considered beneficial to anyone looking for satisfying career advancement. By the end of these two 6-month programs, you will be comfortable playing to your strengths, defining your leadership style, and creating intentional strategies to assure your success however you choose to define it.

 LEADERSHIP FUNDAMENTALS-1

This 6-month intensive course focuses on the first six essential core competencies

Module 1: What is Your Why?

GOAL: Every leader must begin by establishing your Why. A chance to refine your purpose.

Given the regular demands of life and work, it may be easy to overlook the opportunity to get clear on your overarching purpose as a woman physician. Though your purpose or “why” will likely evolve over time, forming a strong “why” statement will provide you with the clarity to face professional commitments and ready you for higher leadership aspirations as relates to your well-being as well as career ambitions. 

In discussing context – how you currently relate to your life and work— you will be prepared to define your core values, priorities, preferences, and non-negotiables, factors that determine where you should direct your energy and actions. Ultimately you will prepare a Life Purpose Statement to guide you in your journey going forward.

By the end of this module you will be able to: 

  1. Define your core values. Understand what makes you tick.
  2. Determine your top priorities. Know what motivates you personally and professionally                       
  3. Identify what you stand for. Name any issues/concerns that compel you. 
  4. Identify your non-negotiables. Identify the essentials required to thrive.   
  5. Create your Life Purpose Statement with a strategic plan to develop as a leader

Module 2:  What is your Leadership Philosophy & Style?

GOAL: Explore what “leadership” means to you. What does “great leadership” look like? How will you develop yourself as a great leader? 

By the end of this module you will be able to:  

  1. Identify the role of Manager vs Lead              
  2. Define the 5 Levels of Leadership
  3. Define Strengths-based Leadership.
  4. Define a 360 Degree Approach to Leadership- Leading above, below, and across 
  5. Create your leadership mission and vision statement.

Module 3: Creating Your Leadership Brand 

GOALS: Understand that you are a leader right now, regardless of your current position or title.
Be more purposeful by forging your personal brand so that you can have a positive effect on others.

By the end of this module you will be able to: 

  1. Define your personal brand and create a personal brand statement                                     
  2. Identify 3 key strategies to leverage your influence from where you are and have a lasting impact
  3. Develop your personal style of executive presence
  4. Contrast Managers from Leaders

Module 4: Building Self-Confidence and Navigating Doubt

GOAL: Understand how our “Inner Critic” shows up for us as women and leaders. Understand how can we overcome doubt and lack of self-confidence.

By the end of this module you will be able to:        

  1. Identify your “inner critic”
  2. Define Imposter phenomenon
  3. Identify strategies for working through fear and inner criticism

Module 5: Developing Emotional Intelligence; Recognizing Biases

GOAL: Understand what is “EQ.” Understand why this awareness & skill is so important as a leader.

  1. Define emotional intelligence and implicit/explicit bias
  2. Determine how you show up under stress and identify how do you interact with others under stress
  3. Identify strategies to deepen your own emotional intelligence and help enhance your self-awareness of personal implicit biases.

Module 6

GOAL: Embrace the value of establishing boundaries as a woman, as a physician, and as a leader. Understand the necessity of self-care and self-compassion in modeling sound leadership.

By the end of this module you will be able to:                  

  1. Define boundaries and discuss why setting boundaries is essential to effective leadership.
  2. Create a plan to attend to your personal wellbeing as an acknowledged priority.
  3. Define work-life integration and identify strategies to achieve the right balance for you.

 

LEADERSHIP FUNDAMENTALS- 2

Coming in September 2023

This 6-month intensive course addresses six more essential, targeted core competencies

Prerequisite: Leadership Fundamental-1

Module 7: Getting the Most from Mentorship, Sponsorship, and Networking

GOAL: Understand the difference between Mentorship and Sponsorship. Understand how to Mentor and Sponsor others as a leader. Understand how to sponsor others to increase their opportunities for advancement.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  1. Contrast Mentorship and Sponsorship
  2. Identify how to seek out a sponsor(s) to assist you in achieving your professional goals
  3. Describe the benefits of being mentored and mentoring others

Module 8: Difficult Conversations & Conflict Competence

GOAL: Learn to handle difficult conversations from a position of leadership

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  1. Discuss ways to stay in dialogue when in a Crucial Conversation
  2. Maintain a safe environment when faced with difficult conversations by managing conflict
  3. Identify different perspectives that may contribute to difficult conversations

Module 9: Become an Inclusive Leader  

GOAL: Learn to see negotiation as an important communication skill, and to rely on negotiation as an opportunity for problem-solving and finding a satisfactory compromise for all parties.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  1. Understand cultural competence as a key to effectively leveraging DEI, and differentiate between these concepts
  2. Discuss power, privilege, and the benefits of allyship
  3. Identify barriers to inclusive leadership: Unconscious bias, Microaggressions, code-switching, and covering
  4. COMMIT™ to becoming an Inclusive Leader (a how-to model for everyday inclusion by La’Wana Harris)

Module 10: Increasing Your Visibility and Gaining Personal Recognition

GOAL: Increase your awareness of inclusiveness in your own self-leadership and in leading others.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  1. Recognize the benefits of building your visibility and recognition within your organization and beyond
  2. Identify strategies to increase your visibility within your organization and nationally
  3. Define opportunities to speak, publish, and produce content that raises your profile

Module 11: Applying Negotiation Skills in Medicine 

GOAL: Gain recognition both within the organization and nationally to increase opportunities for career satisfaction and advancement. Learn to apply these principles to your mentees and staff so they too will excel.

By the end of the module, you will be able to:

  1. Identify when and how you can negotiate
  2. Determine how to leverage your own personal power and influence to create Win-Win results.
  3. Define your zone of influence

Module 12: Navigating the Next Step in Your Leadership Journey 

GOAL: Identify your leadership goals and learn strategies for rising into leadership.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

  1. Define your short and long-term leadership goals, and how they align with your purpose and your Why
  2. Identify the next step in your leadership journey
  3. Identify strategies for how to achieve your next leadership goal
  4. Recognize the influence you have in creating your own path as a leader
