Nutan Vaidya, MD

29Dr. Vaidya began her career at Chicago Medical School as a psychiatry resident in 1984. After finishing her residency she joined University of Illinois as an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Staff Psychiatrist at the West Side VA Medical center. Dr. Vaidya returned to CMS as Assistant Professor of Psychiatry in 1989 and has been here at Chicago Medical School and RFUMS as a faculty member. During her time at CMS Dr. Vaidya held various administrative positions: She served as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences from 2003-2013 and Interim Chair of the Department of Neurology (2009). In the past, Dr. Vaidya has also held several educational positions within the department, including Director of Medical Student Education and Acting Director of Residency Training. Dr. Vaidya currently directs the psychiatry clerkship and is a major teacher in the Clinical Neuroscience course.

Nationally active in the field of education, Dr. Vaidya serves on the Executive Council of the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP) as their President Elect. As an ADMSEP Council Member Dr. Vaidya has conducted several faculty development workshops for new clerkship directors. Dr. Vaidya also serves on the council of Alliance of Clinical Educators (A national group representing all the core clerkship) and is chair of their communication committee. Dr. Vaidya is also a member of NBME test committee for neurology and neurosciences. Dr. Vaidya has served as the councilor of Illinois Psychiatric Society and President of Illinois chapter of Indo American Psychiatric Association

Since 2011 Dr. Vaidya has been serving as the Assistant Chief Medical Executive for Research and Development at FHCC. In this role Dr. Vaidya has tirelessly worked in bringing the research organizations of these two institutions closer and expanded the FHCC research program. In addition, Dr. Vaidya was also instrumental in starting the faculty development program at the FHCC and remains actively involved in faculty and resident development at FHCC

Despite of her extensive administrative and educational responsibilities, Dr. Vaidya has maintained her clinical practice. A distinguished fellow of American Psychiatric Association, she is certified in the subspecialty of Behavioral Neurology and Neuropsychiatry by the United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties and runs a behavioral neurology/neuropsychiatry clinic at FHCC. She has published extensively on psychopathology and neuropsychiatric education. She has won several awards for teaching and clinical care of neuropsychiatric patients. She is a reviewer for several academic journals. Dr. Vaidya is the co-author of two textbooks, Psychiatry Rounds (Medmaster Publishing) and Descriptive Psychopathology (Cambridge University Press), and has authored several peer reviewed articles and has given many invited presentations.

As a lifelong academician and administrator, Dr. Vaidya has spent a considerable amount of time recognizing and cultivating talents of Psychiatry Residents and faculty members and helping enhance their teaching and academic skills.
