Amy Hise, MD

Director 2019 – 2021

 

Amy G. Hise is an Associate Professor of Pathology and International Health as well as a Physician and Researcher at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. She earned a MPH with a focus in international and family health from UCLA prior to earning her medical degree at the George Washington University Medical Center. After residency training in Internal Medicine at University Hospitals of Cleveland during which she carried out research on HIV and TB in Uganda, she completed a research fellowship in Infectious Diseases at CWRU/UH, focusing on innate immune recognition of filarial parasites. Her research currently focuses on the activation of innate immune responses, particularly activation of the inflammasome by infectious pathogens including parasites, fungal infections and Rift Valley fever virus. She received a Young Investigator Award from the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene and has been a finalist for two years for the Crain’s Business Cleveland Health Care Hero Award, Advancements in Healthcare category. She is active in the CWRU School of Medicine including serving for many years as a steering committee member of the Women Faculty School of Medicine (WFSOM) as well as elected as president from 2016 – 18; serving on the SOM admissions committee; serving on the University Faculty Senate Committee on Women; serving on many graduate student advisory committees; organizing the Immunology Training Program Annual Retreat; co-organizing the weekly World Health Interest Group (WHIG) seminars; advising student organizations including the Journal Distribution Project and the local branch of the Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) and participating in student and faculty mentoring programs.  She is an active member of the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and has served on the membership committee and mentored and advised the local student AMWA chapter. She was elected to serve on the Editorial Board of the Innate Immunity journal as well as serving as an officer and counselor for the International Endotoxin and Innate Immunity Society (IEIIS). During her free time Amy enjoys raising chickens, organic gardening, fishing and spending time outdoors with her family and college aged son.
