Reshma Jagsi, M.D., D.Phil.
Reshma Jagsi, M.D., D.Phil. is tenured Professor and Deputy Chair in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Director of the Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine at the University of Michigan. She graduated first in her class from Harvard College and then pursued her medical training at Harvard Medical School. She also served as a fellow in the Center for Ethics at Harvard University and completed her doctorate in Social Policy at Oxford University as a Marshall Scholar. Internationally recognized for her work as a clinical trialist and health services researcher in the field of breast cancer, Dr. Jagsi focuses medical research on improving quality of care, both by advancing the ways in which breast cancer is treated with radiation and by advancing the understanding of patient decision-making, cost, and access to appropriate care. Her social scientific research includes research into issues of bioethics arising from cancer care and research regarding gender issues, including studies of women’s representation in the medical profession. She is the author of over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including multiple high-impact publications in journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA.
Dr. Jagsi has devoted a substantial portion of her scholarly effort to investigations regarding gender equity and success in academic medicine. She is a frequently invited lecturer on this subject, having spoken as the Mary Elizabeth Garrett visiting professor at Johns Hopkins, the Women in Medicine Anniversary speaker at Harvard, the keynote speaker for the BIRCWH symposium at NIH, the Clipp-Speer visiting professor at Duke, an invited lecturer to the Association of Professors of Medicine, the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairs, the American Association of Medical Colleges, the American Medical Association, and for dozens of other institutions and medical specialty organizations in the US and abroad. Her research in this area has been funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (R01 HL-101997), the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the American Medical Association, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. She currently serves as the national PI of the program evaluation of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation’s Fund to Retain Clinical Scientists.
A former member of the Steering Committee of the AAMC’s Group on Women in Medicine in Science, Dr. Jagsi now serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Steering Committee of the Early Breast Cancer Trialists Collaborative Group, the editorial boards of the Journal of Clinical Oncology and JAMA Oncology, as part of the advisory group for a Lancet theme issue on women in medicine, and numerous other influential national professional committees. Her contributions have been recognized with her election to the American Society of Clinical Investigation.
Her research is frequently featured in the popular media, including coverage by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, NPR, and national network nightly news.
