The 2012 AMWA National Student Conference was a resounding success, with over 175 students in attendance from all corners of the U.S. and the Caribbean. Students were treated to an array of inspiring speakers, all of whom helped address this year’s theme of “Achieving Success as Women in Medicine: Strategic Career and Personal Development”. Interspersed among the talks were outstanding networking opportunities, poster sessions, presentations on global health initiatives, and a hands-on suturing session.
Friday’s keynote address was given by Rachel Naomi Remen, MD, founding director of the Institute for the Study of Health and Illness and clinical professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. She is also the author of the New York Times bestselling book Kitchen Table Wisdom: Stories That Heal, which has been published in over eleven languages and used in eighteen medical schools as the standard for teaching Introduction to Clinical Medicine courses. Dr. Remen delivered a moving speech about her life as a rabbi’s granddaughter and the impact that had on her chosen profession. She ended her speech by imparting several words of wisdom to the medical professionals in the audience and she was received with a heartfelt standing ovation.
The events leading up to Dr. Remen’s keynote included a collection of educational and thought-provoking talks by a variety of presenters, including Marcia Shew, MD, MPH, whose talk was titled, Human Papillomavirus Vaccines: There are No Controversies. Lila Nachtigall, MD discussed the role of hormones in women’s health. The next MWIA triennial meeting will be held in Seoul, Korea in 2013 and Korean representatives were present at the AMWA meeting to help promote the event while dressed in beautifully colored traditional Korean attire.

Luanne Thorndyke, MD FACP followed this with a discussion about the importance of mentorship, with her talk titled, Take Care of Your Career!. Sophie Delaunay, Executive Director of Medicins san Frontiers (USA), provided information regarding medical volunteering opportunities both nationally and internationally.
Student elections were held on Saturday afternoon. As ballots were tallied, Savitha Bonthala, an Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellow, gave a presentation on her experience volunteering in the Engeye Clinic in Uganda. The newly elected 2012-2013 officers then met for their first board meeting later that evening.
Saturday ended with an elegant night at the AMWA 97th Anniversary Gala, with the keynote address by the renowned Gloria Steinem. Gloria Steinem is the founder of Ms. Magazine and a well-know American feminist, journalist, author, and activist. Her inspirational speech about pursuing personal and professional goals, along with her personal stories, kept the crowd memorized. In addition to her talk, several awards were presented at the Gala to medical students and physicians for their contribution to research and leadership through AWMA.
The conference ended on Sunday with three additional presentations about sex- and gender-specific women’s health, global health, and cardiovascular disease in women. Presenters included Kim Templeton, MD, Janice Werbinski, MD, Joanna Wilson, DO, Josephine Ojiambo, MD, MPH, and Debra Judelson, MD, FACC. The final event of the conference was a suturing skills workshop, during which students had the opportunity to interact with residents from several specialties including ENT, OB/Gyn, and emergency medicine.
Students in attendance remarked that the conference was inspirational, informative, and exceptional in quality. In addition to attending the formal talks and presentations, students also formed friendships and professional. With the great success of the 97th Annual AMWA Conference, the AMWA Student Division has already began to plan next year’s conference in 2013.
