Mariyam Cherry (Kuruvilla) spent most of her childhood in India, Saudi Arabia, and New York City, before finally settling down in the small town of Livingston, Texas. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, where she majored in neurobiology and conducted research in neurodevelopment. In college, she founded a grief group at a local school and served as Women's Health Chair for a campus business group called Phi Beta Chi. She traveled to Ecuador and India, where she worked in delivering healthcare to their respective indigenous populations. She also played on UT's lacrosse team for two years. After college, she attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she completed a post-baccalaureate program and did research in neurobehavioral studies. She is currently a member of the Class of 2013 at Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. She is a member of her local AMWA chapter and Vice-president of a new club on campus called Food as Medicine, which aims to promote healthy eating by helping run farmers markets, building community gardens, and educating patients about nutrition. Some of her favorite things to do are socializing with friends, cooking, learning foreign languages, and practicing hot yoga.

As this year's National Conference Chair, she hopes to promote AMWA's relevance as a means for networking and wants to help others realize its potential for shaping the professional and personal lives of medical students. The women she met through AMWA in the past two years have inspired her in many ways, and she hopes to reach out to other women so that they too take advantage to what AMWA has to offer them.
