Komal Paladugu is a MS1 in the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Class of 2016. Having attended the University of Miami Undergraduate institution, she majored in Biology and Anthropology with a minor in Chemistry. During her time at UMMSM, she has become actively involved in DOCS (Department of Community Service), an entirely student run organization that puts on 9 annual health fairs to under-served populations in South Florida.  She holds a leadership position in DOCS as Hurricane and Emergency Preparedness Team’s Assistant Director.  She is also a member of the Medical Reserve Corps and hopes to continue serving the community through non-profit organizations.  Throughout the course of her undergraduate career she has worked as an on-air DJ at the campus radio station.  After rushing Phi Sigma Pi Co-Ed Honors Fraternity during her sophomore year, she’s held leadership positions such as Historian and Alumni Relations Chair.  She has also worked with Minority Women in Medicine. In her spare time she hip-hop dances with fellow medical students, makes steaming cups of Earl Grey, enjoys quirky foreign films, travels, and obsessively shops.

With the understanding that women in medicine face unique problems in today’s day and age, she recognizes the importance of being involved in AMWA as a budding physician.  Having a structure to organize and represent the voices of such a large minority of practicing physicians is necessary to encourage growth and diversity in the medical field and in all its specialties. Through encouraging mentorship, active communication, and increasing awareness of regional activities, she hopes to make AMWA a more cohesive organization that is ready to take on the most current issues.  Recognizing that no man (or woman) is an island, she works with the vision of AMWA’s founders, with each other, for each other, and for our future peers.
