Aleena Paul is a member of the Albany Medical College Class of 2016, and is also pursuing her MBA in Healthcare Management from Union Graduate College. She is proud to serve as AMWA’s Region 2 Director, serving the students chapter of New York and New Jersey.  She also serves as AMWA’s Publications Chair, working on the Connections and Newsflash newsletters to spread the impact of AMWA’s chapters and members on the local and national scene.

At Albany Med, Aleena is involved in the local AMWA chapter as treasurer, the Medical Student Tobacco Cessation Consult Service, the local Student National Medical Association chapter, and the Scholars Program in Biomedical Ethics. She is especially proud of her work with AMC AMWA’s annual Interpersonal Violence Awareness week, which aims to educate health professionals of the multifaceted needs of their patients who have been affected by interpersonal violence.

Aleena is the co-founder and editor-in-chief of in-Training (in-training.org), a peer-reviewed online newspaper that serves as a forum for medical students to share their unique passions, reflect on their medical education, and discuss the future of the medical profession.

Aleena graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Union College in 2012, majoring in biology and sociology. At Union, Aleena conducted sociological research on how media representations have affected young female African American professionals, and how gender stereotypes continue to challenge the leadership aspirations of young female professionals.

Aleena believes that women physicians play a vital role in redefining access to health care and equality in our society, and is thus excited to be contributing to AMWA’s work in advancing women in medicine and addressing women’s health concerns. Aleena is enthusiastic about discussing these issues with her fellow medical students, and working with AMWA to ensure that all medical students are able to find a balance between their medical educations and the passions that first brought them into the field of medicine.
