i.         Become a Physician Mentor for Residents

Dear Physician,

Despite the extraordinary progress women have made in medicine over the last 150 years, there continues to be a pressing need for female role models and mentors, as well as increased study of women’s health issues. Since 1915, the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) has been working to address these issues by serving as the voice of women’s health and the advancement of women in medicine.

This year, AMWA is making historical advances by launching their first resident division.  AMWA recognizes that the years of a resident’s education, training and early career are those of excitement, challenge and anxiety. One of the ways AMWA seeks to support its resident physician members is through the Charlotte Edwards Maguire, MD Mentor Register in which resident physicians have the opportunity to access the unique knowledge and experiences of other female physicians who can offer advice on education, future career and networking opportunities across the country.

The Charlotte Edwards Maguire, MD Mentor Register is a searchable database of physician mentors in specialties as varied as within AMWA itself.  The register is named in honor of Dr. Charlotte Maguire, MD, one of the first female physicians in the state of Florida, first woman president of the Florida Pediatric Society, and former Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Mercy Hospital in Orlando, FL.  Dr. Maguire has (and continues to) teach and encourage 4 generations of female physicians and exemplifies mentorship in medicine.

The concept behind the Charlotte Edwards Maguire, MD Mentor Register is simple. The interested resident logs into our secure website with their member log-in information to obtain access to this searchable database.  For example, if are pursuing Pediatric Surgery, they can search for Pediatric Surgeon mentors.

Would you be willing to serve as a mentor and help guide resident members in making the right decisions while balancing residency and the plethora of challenges that face women resident physicians everyday?

Expectations of a Mentor:

  • You must be a physician (either male or female faculty at an institution or in private practice).

  • You do not have to be an AMWA member to serve as a mentor though you are encouraged to join AMWA while our 95th anniversary price of $95 lasts.

All residents requesting a mentor will be AMWA resident members. Only then will your e-mail address or telephone number, as decided by you, be provided to the resident, who will then contact you to see if you are available.

To sign up please click here and enter your information, which will be automatically entered into our secure database.

Your support and participation in the Maguire Mentor Register is greatly appreciated! As a token of our appreciation for your espousal, we would like to invite you to joinAMWA as a physician member at our low 95th Anniversary rate of $95! Membership benefits can be found here.

Please feel free to contact us at reisident.division@amwa-doc.org  if you have any questions or would like further information about the program.

Sincerely,
