The Bertha VanHoosen Award, named in honor of the Founder and first President of AMWA, honors a woman physician who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and service to AMWA, and has been an active member for at least five years.

Awardees must be present at the Awards Presentation Ceremony at AMWA's Annual Meeting in order to be eligible to receive an award.

Medicine: A Woman's Career

When AMWA was founded in 1915, women represented 5-6% of all physicians in the U.S. The organization's statement of purpose was, "to bring Medical Women into communication with each other for their mutual advantage, and to encourage social and harmonious relations within and without the profession."
