This year we are honored to hear Dr. Julie Ann Freischlag speak about advances in vascular surgery. Dr. Freischlag is The William Stewart Halsted Professor, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Freischlag has served as a Governor of the American College of Surgeons (2000-2006), and is presently a Regent of the American College of Surgeons since 2006.
Before Dr. Freischlag returned to work at UCLA, she was a Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin where she was also the Vice Chair of the Vascular Surgery Section and Chief of Surgery at Zablocki VA Medical Center.
Dr. Freischlag is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of thoracic outlet syndrome. She is presently evaluating the outcomes of patients with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome with a prospective randomized sutdy comparing botox injections to first rib resection and scalenectomy. She is the national principal investigator of the VA OVER trial (Open Versus Endovascular Repair) of abdominal aortic aneurysms. The study is a prospective randomized trial which has randomized over 800 patients and from 34 medical centers across the country. She is presently serving as President-elect of the Society of Vascular Surgery. She is the Editor of the Archives of Surgery which is one of the major surgical journals. She also serves on several other editorial boards. She has published over 200 manuscripts, numerous abstracts and book chapters.
