April 20, 2012: AMWA Leader Makes Suggestion for Improvement of the Proposed USPSTF Ovarian Cancer Screening Guidelines

Jan Werbinski, MD, leader of AMWA's Women's Health Working Group initiative, responded to an invitation from Virginia Moyer, MD, MPH, Chair, U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), for input and feedback to the proposed guidelines. These are Dr. Werbinski's comments:

  1. Fully agree with the USPSTF recommendation that serum Ca125 levels and pelvic ultrasound should NOT be used as a mass screening modality for women at low risk for ovarian cancer. (This excludes those with family history or the BrCa genes). It does more harm than good.
  2. USPSTF should create Public Health information that makes clear the rate of risk of each screening procedure for every life saved.
  3. Guidelines should include comments on the newer screening tests that are on the market, noting that they may become useful but at present data is insufficient to make a recommendation.
