Grant Opportunity for Women in Medicine
Reminder Announcement for the AMA J.  Giambalvo Scholarship

Joan Fara Giambalvo received her medical degree from Temple University Medical School.  Dr. Giambalvo was an intern at Temple University Hospital and certified in her residency by the American Board of Anesthesiology.  Dr. Giambalvo passed away on May 14, 1971, at age 39, of liposarcoma.

The AMA Foundation and the AMA Women Physicians Congress (WPC) established a Fund for the Advancement of Women in Medicine.  The Fund, encompasses the Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship program provides financial support for physician and other researchers exploring the key career issues facing women in medicine today.

According to the AMA,  women comprise nearly a third of all US physicians and half of all US medical students.  Although this is considered progress, gender bias and discrimination are still present.  According to a US Census Bureau report, female physicians make 63 cents for every dollar earned by a male physician and there are few other professions that exhibit greater salary disparities by sex in the United States.

The program awards annual grants up to $10,000 to physicians and researchers from related fields that submit innovative work/practice research proposals.  Applications are reviewed by the WPC Governing Council and the AMA Foundation Board for feasibility, originality, applicability to the spirit of the award and importance to women in medicine.

Proposals for the 2012 Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship are currently being accepted.  Proposals are due at 5 pm Central time on February 20, 2012.  Download the application form , which includes detailed instructions or call (312) 464-4743 for additional information.
