March 8th: International Women’s Day
Annually on March 8th thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. Activities connect women from all around the world ranging from government activities, political rallies, business conferences, networking events, women’s craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more. Many global corporations have also started to actively support International Women’s Day and the month of March is designated as ‘Women’s History Month’.
The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women’s and society’s thoughts about women’s equality and emancipation. Many feminists from the 1970′s contributed to the dramatic increase in women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights and an increased critical mass of women’s visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life.
Unfortunately, women in medicine are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts and medical training lacks gender specific medical training. The American Medical Women’s Association exists to advocate for the advancement of women in medicine and the development of gender specific medicine and medical training. Join AMWA on April 13-15 in Miami at AMWA’s 97th annual meeting: Achieving Success for Women in Medicine to discuss these issues and network with your female colleagues.
