The American Medical Women’s Association promotes the mentoring and networking of women in medicine. Quarterly, national AMWA holds a facebook contest to provide financial support to local AMWA branches for their next mentoring and networking event. The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine won our most recent contest. To enter the next contest, read about the rules here.
The University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine chapter of AMWA hosted a “Muffins with Mentors” networking event on September 13th, 2012 in the Moss Auditorium Lobby. Female physicians from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics and Internal Medicine were invited to mentor and network with first and second year medical students. The event began with insights from Dr. App, UIC AMWA advisor, OB/GYN Clerkship Director and Assistant Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. App described her experience as a female in OB/GYN and AMWA members had the opportunity to approach her for research and clerkship advice. We were also privileged to have Dr. Amanda Osta and Dr. Michelle Barnes from the pediatrics and internal medicine program in attendance. They spoke to reasons they choose to specialize in Medicine/Pediatrics, as opposed to completing either program on its own.
This was the first AMWA event of the school year so being able to bring the first year and second year medical students together was great. The UIC Chapter of AMWA is grateful for the opportunity we had to host this event and we look forward to more networking events to bring female physicians and medical students together.
