95th Anniversary Campaign

in 2012

AMWA's charitable arm, the American Women's Hospitals Service (AWHS), was founded in 1917 to help bring medical care to war ravaged areas of Europe. This movement, which began in France, eventually spread to Eastern Europe and Asia, bringing medical aid to areas devastated by poverty, genocide, war, or natural disasters. Much of the historical work of AWHS is chronicled by Dr. Esther Pohl Lovejoy in her remarkable book, Certain Samaritans which is now available on-line at http://www.ourstory.info/library/2-ww1/Lovejoy/awhTC.html.

Today, AWHS continues its tradition of care in underserved areas of the world as well as communities in need within the United States.

We support...

•  Hopital Bon Samaritain in Limbe, Haiti, located 70 miles from the epicenter of the 2010 earthquake.
• Friendship Clinic Nepal, which supports nearly 50,000 villagers in the area around Meghauli, Chitwan, Nepal and is the fulfillment of a young boy scout's dream. 
• Dayspring Family Health Center which provides healthcare to residents in the remote Appalachian region of Eastern Tennessee and Kentucky.
• Engeye Clinic in Uganda, which was founded by a medical student with the help of some friends and her grandmother's inheritance. First opened in 2006, the clinic now sees 15,000 patients a year. 
• Amazon Hope Medical Ships, which provide health services for about 100,000 patients every year in the remote communities on the Amazon River in South America.
• travel grants for AMWA medical students who are working abroad in underserved areas of the world.
• and much more.
