The Johns Hopkins University
Dr. Burke is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins University, where she directs the family planning program. She also has a joint appointment in the School of Public Health. She obtained a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. She then attended Johns Hopkins to complete a fellowship in family planning and a Masters in Public Health. Since completing her fellowship in 2002, she has held a faculty position at Johns Hopkins.
Though she has a particular focus in Family Planning, her job includes many aspects of obstetrics and gynecology. In her clinical practice, Dr. Burke sees women across a wide range of ages, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds. She also conducts clinical research in family planning and related topics. Her degree in Public Health informs her clinical perspective and teaching activities. Women's health problems like obesity, unintended pregnancy, depression, and life stressors affect the health of many women, regardless of what type of physician cares for them. "Women's Health" includes but is not limited to reproductive health, as AMWA clearly realizes.
She thinks AMWA is unique in the support that it provides to women physicians at all levels of education and practice, from medical students to senior faculty. The complementary missions of advancing women in medicine, and advocating for improvements in women's health, make AMWA a truly special organization whose priorities match her own.
